🍕It's Street Food Week! Meet the Supplì

Today's featured Italian street food is the supplì (pronounced su-PLEE). If you visit Rome, this is a must-try street food snack. You can find them mainly in Rome as well as in other parts of Lazio, but generally not outside the region.

In fact, the supplì is so iconic, it even made Fodor's list of 20 Must-Try Street Foods Around the World (number 3!)

The ingredients of a supplì are simple (this recipe is in Italian but has pictures):

  • Carnaroli rice
  • Ground beef or pork
  • Tomato puree
  • Mozzarella
  • Grated pecorino or parmesan
  • Butter
  • Eggs
  • Bread crumbs
  • Vegetable broth
  • Onion, salt, pepper

The word is invariable in the singular and plural forms, so when you order you can say either "un supplì" or "due-tre-quattro etc. supplì" You can find supplì pretty much anywhere pizza is sold. That means it's easy to drop into a pizza al taglio shop where they sell take-out pizza squares by weight, and get a supplì to take with you. They usually cost one to two euros each.
